Alberobello: A Fairy Tale Town in Puglia
Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a charming town in the Puglia region of Italy, renowned for its unique architectural style: the trulli. These iconic, whitewashed, cone-shaped houses with conical roofs are a sight to behold.
The trulli were originally built by local farmers as temporary shelters to avoid hefty taxes imposed by the Kingdom of Naples. Their distinctive design, with easily removable conical roofs, allowed them to be quickly dismantled and reassembled, thus evading tax collectors. Over time, these humble dwellings evolved into permanent homes, and today, they stand as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local people.
One day in Alberobello
We hopped on a bus from Monopoli to Alberobello, run by Autolinee Lentini. Well, that was the plan anyway! When we got to the bus stop, there was a huge queue of tourists waiting. We were worried we wouldn’t all fit on the bus, but luckily a mini-van taxi arrived. We split the 50 euro fare with four other people.
On the way, we saw amazing views of olive trees and the occasional trullo peeking through. The taxi dropped us off near the trulli, and we spent the day wandering the narrow streets, taking photos, and popping into little shops.
You should definitely check out the gift shop on Via Monte Nero called “Nice to Bi.” They sell all sorts of liquors and souvenirs, but the real reason to go is the free rooftop terrace. The view of the trulli’s cone-shaped roofs is incredible! Just remember to buy something to show your appreciation for the free view. See Nice to Bi on Google Maps.
For lunch, we chose La Locanda Del Gallo. It has a lovely secluded terrace where you can relax under big umbrellas. It’s a great place for a proper meal, but there are also plenty of other cafes and restaurants where you can grab a focaccia, wine, or Aperol Spritz.
After lunch, we took some more photos and headed back to the bus stop. We got there early to make sure we got a seat on the bus back to Monopoli.
